Optimal shapes for anguilliform swimmers at intermediate Reynolds numbers
We investigate the optimal morphologies for fast and efficient anguilliform swimmers at intermediate Reynolds numbers, by combining an evolution strategy with threedimensional viscous vortex methods. We show that anguilliform swimmer shapes enable the trapping and subsequent acceleration of regions of fluid transported along the entire body by the midline travelling wave. A sensitivity analysis...
متن کاملOptimal morphokinematics for undulatory swimmers at intermediate Reynolds numbers
Undulatory locomotion is an archetypal mode of propulsion for natural swimmers across scales. Undulatory swimmers convert transverse body oscillations into forward velocity by a complex interplay between their flexural movements, morphological features and the fluid environment. Natural evolution has produced a wide range of morphokinematic examples of undulatory swimmers that often serve as in...

We noted in the main text the high Strouhal number corresponding to both our and Kern & Koumoutsakos (2006) optimal e cient swimmer's, and attributed this to the lower Reynolds number used in these computational works compared with the analyses in Triantafyllou et al. (1993); Taylor et al. (2003), consistent with Gazzola et al. (2014). However, both in Kern & Koumoutsakos (2006) and in the curr...
متن کاملControllability and time optimal control for low Reynolds numbers swimmers
Abstract. The aim of this paper is to tackle the self-propelling at low Reynolds number by using tools coming from control theory. More precisely we first address the controllability problem: ”Given two arbitrary positions, does it exist ”controls” such that the body can swim from one position to another, with null initial and final deformations?”. We consider a spherical object surrounded by a...
متن کاملOptimal swimming at low Reynolds numbers.
Efficient swimming at low Reynolds numbers is a major concern of microbots. To compare the efficiencies of different swimmers we introduce the notion of "a swimming drag coefficient" which allows for the ranking of swimmers. We find the optimal swimmer within a certain class of two-dimensional swimmers using conformal mapping techniques.
